2016 - Bowhill Estate, Scottish Borders - 3rd Marmot24™

We were delighted to reveal the location for the 2016 event as the Bowhill Estate near Selkirk, 1 ¼ hours north of Carlisle, and part of the extensive Buccleuch range of estates between east and west Scottish Borders / Southern Uplands and part of the River Tweed catchment. This was an area never before used in a mountain marathon event.

Participants were treated to a fantastic mix of high open hillside with decent runnability, large forests, and plenty of trails, all of which dipped into several very scenic river valleys.

2015 - Lowther Hills - 2nd Marmot24™

The 2015 Marmot24™ was held in the Lowther Hills in Southern Scotland with the Event Centre at Durisdeer. The Lowther Hills (also known as the ‘Lowthers’) consist of an extensive area of upland hills in the Southern Uplands of Scotland. The Lowthers are a fantastic area for mountain running and are famous for their steep-sided rolling hills that make for punishing ascents, but superb and fast running on the rounded tops. With many areas of historical mining plus a vast valley network, the Lowther Hills have a wealth of complex contour detail. This is truly one of the premier mountain marathon areas in the UK.

From the Event Centre at Durisdeer our competition area spread east, north and south with lightening quick access into the hills.  In 2014, when the inaugural Marmot24™ was held in the Lake District National Park the competition area was over 300 square kilometres. The Lowther Hills competition area was slightly less than this, but with significantly less ‘dead space’ such as urban areas, lakes and forest. There are few footpaths in the Lowthers but because sheep extensively graze the area, much of the terrain is short grass moorland, which is great for running on.

2014 - Lake District - 1st Marmot24™

The inaugural Marmot24™, was held in the Lake District National Park. The competition area stretches 360 degrees from the Event Centre and includes approximatley 300 square kilometres. To the north are the remote Northern Fells guarded by the imposing flanks of Blencathra. To the south Clough Head marks the start of the Dodd's ridge running towards Helvellyn and ultimately Ambleside. The terrain is perfect for a mountain marathon with laser fast ridges and valleys linking areas of complex contour features. There is also a great network of footpaths and tracks but competitors will need to balance easy running on these, with more direct routes between checkpoints. This area of mountains can be very challenging with steep mountains, cliffs, marshland, fast flowing rivers and energy sapping tussocks.
